about magazine spread design
In this article, Lexi Dwyer explores the cultural and religious reasons why certain foods are considered taboo in different parts of the world. I designed two magazine spreads to cohesively represent the article’s content.
One of my spreads features an infographic that visualizes the different factors that contribute to food taboos. The infographic is designed on a weighing scale, that show “Trends In Obesity and Severe Obesity Prevalence Among Adults Over 20 In the USA”.The type is simple and easy to read, but it still has a bit of personality. The playful fonts help to keep the infographic from feeling too serious.
The opening spread features a close-up shot of hands holding a donut and an apple. This is a powerful visual that effectively highlights the comparisons between different foods and cultures. The juxtaposition of the donut and the apple is a reminder that what is considered taboo in one culture may not be taboo in another.
The overall color palette for the spreads is different shades of orange and blue. The orange represents the excitement and temptation of food, while the blue represents the seriousness of the topic. The colors are used to create a cohesive look and feel for the spreads.

About “food taboos” article
The article “Food Taboos” by Lexi Dwyer explores the cultural and religious reasons why certain foods are considered taboo in different parts of the world. Dwyer begins by defining a food taboo as “a prohibition against the consumption of a particular food or food product.” She then goes on to discuss the different reasons why food taboos exist, including religious beliefs, cultural practices, and personal preferences.
Dwyer then provides a number of examples of food taboos from around the world. For example, in India, beef is considered taboo because cows are sacred animals. In China, eating dog meat is taboo because dogs are considered companions, not food. And in the United States, many people believe that it is taboo to eat insects, even though they are a perfectly nutritious food source.
Dwyer concludes the article by arguing that food taboos are often based on irrational fears and superstitions. However, she also acknowledges that food taboos can play an important role in maintaining cultural identity and ensuring food safety.
The article “Food Taboos” is a thought-provoking and informative read that provides insights into the cultural and religious factors that influence our food choices. It is a must-read for anyone who is interested in learning more about the world of food.
